Last night, more than 400 people gathered at Le Laboratoire for the launch party of Le Whaf, a new design by french culinary designer Marc Bretillot and American inventor David Edwards. The event was the conclusion of a two-day workshop at the Laboratoire during which three of the world’s top chefs, Massimo Bottura from the Osteria Francescana in Modena, Ben Shewry from Attica in Melbourne and Homaro Cantu from Moto in Chicago experimented with the Whaf and prepared their own recipees to breathe in.
While Homaro used some of his miracle berries to make the first breathable chocolate cake of a mix of hazlenut liquor and lemon vodka, Massimo drew inspiration from french cuisine and tried a canard’ à l’orange. Ben, for his part, mixed four Whaffing clouds from rice, rice vinegar, soja sauce and ginger to create a very surprising mix.
The Whaf will be shipped starting in March 2012 but you already preorder on our website here. You can pour your favorite cocktail or juice and turn it into a cloud of flavor for a totally new experience. Pics to follow…
Last week, we held a small party for the launch of our brand new design, the CellBag.
Present were David Edwards, our founder, Mathieu Lehanneur and Julien Benayoun, who designed the CellBag, and Sandrine Quetier, the face of the CellBag. Also present were our partners from EARTH Water as we decided to donate all of the proceeds from the CellBag to the EARTH Water Foundation.
In fact, the CellBag is the first humanitarian commercial project of the Lab Store. It began as an experiment to find a better way to carry water around the world using the cell as a model. David engaged Mathieu Lehanneur to work on the design and they partnered with French and South African teams. Today, as we sell a first urban edition in the developed world, we are working with the community of Moretele just north of Johannesburg to explore how it could be used to carry water in rural environments. Like a cell, the CellBag can grow to carry lots of water by connecting the bottles and carrying them on your shoulder.
As with all of our designs, we’d love your feedback. We hope that these first 500 CellBags – all of which are numbered and signed by David and Mathieu – are going to teach us a lot and we’ll be integrating this feedback over the course of the next few months to improve the designs and add features!

Arthur I. Miller, emeritus professor of history and philosophy of science at University College London will visit Le Laboratoire on nov 21 for a talk entitled: “The Coming of a Third Culture”.

After news of the AeroShot spread through Gizmodo and CoolHunting, and after Major Nelson tweeted about it, a few other media outlets followed suit. First among those was FastCo Design, which published a short post on our breathable energy! Check it out here.
Our partners over at Le Laboratoire, the artscience design space in Paris, opened their exhibit last night and hosted part of the party. Created by Buenos Aires architect Ciro Najle, the exhibit centers around a central masterpiece: a large “cloud” made out of crochet. For the past few years, Ciro has worked with scientists and engineers towards a system to turn cloud water into drinkable water. Turns out the surface of a cloud is a fractal that’s difficult to represent mathematically but that crochet is particularly appropriate to represent those same kinds of fractals.
